LICHTDRUK/LIGHTPRINT

I was introduced to this special material, lightprint paper, by a guest teacher/artist Marriane Thuenissen. It is an outdated material formerly used in architecture to reproduce blueprints. Nowadays computers have taken over this function since it is also an environmental hazard to continue reproducing this way. What made this material so interesting for me to use is that it is a lightsensitive paper, however not as highly sensitive as fotopaper making it much easier to experiment with. Another special feature is that it develops as a 'positive' image as opposed to photographic paper. I commenced a research on how I could literally 'capture' light in this paper. If I would shine a lamp on one concentrated area, after developing the paper, I would be left with a print of a light hue.

The result was worked out in this installation which I built as a part of my finals exhibition at the Art Academy. To make this I laid down 3 strokes of lightprintpaper on the floor, in the evening(around dusk). In the middle of the room I had hung a lamp quite low and close to the floor. I left the light on for the whole night and in the morning I returned to turn off the lamp, collect the paper and develop it. When the result was finally satisfactory I took down the lamp and glued the paper to the floor. Spectators recognized the circle as light but they kept on looking up to try and discover where the source was actually coming from!
